A walk using the South Tynedale Railway for the outward leg. (Top) Starting from Alston station, with the carriages hauled by the “Green Dragon” stream engine. (Middle) From Lintley halt, the route followed a deserted the Pennine Way, with a quick detour to Kirkhaugh to see the Green Dragon on its return journey, and for good views over the South Tynedale valley. (Bottom) The embankments of the Roman fort of Epiacum, with its handy cafe, a guidepost of doubtfulness usefulness, and crossing the Gilderdale Burn on the return to Alston.

From a detour via Allenheads on the way home. (Left) The surprising sight of a shaggy inkcap pushing up through the ground near the Hemmel Cafe. (Right) Capped mineshaft on a mining-themed walk from Allenheads. Usually some mine workings add some colour to a walk, but the area around West End had been so thoroughly disfigured by mining to be off-putting.
