{"id":953,"date":"2011-12-04T22:17:58","date_gmt":"2011-12-04T22:17:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dur.ac.uk\/paul.hodgkinson\/wordpress\/?p=953"},"modified":"2023-03-09T13:36:11","modified_gmt":"2023-03-09T13:36:11","slug":"wirksworth-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/12\/wirksworth-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Wirksworth I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pictures from a long weekend in early July in the southern part of the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Peak District\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peak_district\">Peak District<\/a>, based in the Derbyshire town of <a title=\"Wikipedia on Wirksworth\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wirksworth\">Wirksworth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/12\/wirksworth-i\/monsalecheetortunnel\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/MonsaleCheeTorTunnel-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"MonsaleCheeTorTunnel\" title=\"MonsaleCheeTorTunnel\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5923\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/12\/wirksworth-i\/monsaletunnel\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/MonsaleTunnel-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"MonsaleTunnel\" title=\"MonsaleTunnel\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5929\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Monsal Trail\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monsal_Trail\">Monsal Trail<\/a> follows a section of the <a title=\"Wikipedia on MBM railway\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester,_Buxton,_Matlock_and_Midlands_Junction_Railway\">Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midland Junction railway<\/a> along the <a title=\"Wiipedia on River Wye\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Wye,_Derbyshire\">River Wye<\/a>. The railway was closed in 1968, and the tunnels were only recently re-opened (previously the trail involved significant diversions around the tunnels).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/12\/wirksworth-i\/monsaleabseiler\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/MonsaleAbseiler-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"MonsaleAbseiler\" title=\"MonsaleAbseiler\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5922\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A reluctant abseiler!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/12\/wirksworth-i\/monsalemillersdale\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/MonsaleMillersDale-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"MonsaleMillersDale\" title=\"MonsaleMillersDale\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5926\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Wikipedia on Milers Dale station\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Millers_Dale_railway_station\">Millers Dale<\/a> used to be such a significant station that there are two viaducts! The mill was criss-crossed with wooden pipes carrying the flour.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/12\/wirksworth-i\/wirksworthflourpurifier\/\"><img the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Nine Ladies\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nine_Ladies\">Nine Ladies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/12\/wirksworth-i\/wirksworthfungustree\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/WirksworthFungusTree-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"WirksworthFungusTree\" title=\"WirksworthFungusTree\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5937\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What looks to be a type of <a title=\"Wikipedia on pleurotus\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pleurotus\">oyster mushroom<\/a> growing on a dead tree at the edge of the moor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pictures from a long
