The common theme is &#8220;outside&#8221; &#8211; no prizes for guessing the following theme!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/01\/boston-i\/bostonhancocktower\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/BostonHancockTower-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BostonHancockTower\" title=\"BostonHancockTower\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4926\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The hotel was in a prime site in the <a title=\"Wikipedia on Back Bay\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Back_Bay,_Boston\">Back Bay<\/a> of Boston, just up Boylston street from the iconic <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Hancock tower\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hancock_Tower\">John Hancock tower<\/a> [42 20 58 N, 71 4 29 W], here with <a title=\"Wikipedia on Trinity Church\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trinity_Church,_Boston\">Trinity Church<\/a> in the foreground.  The land of Back Bay was created by infill  of Boston Bay in the latter half of the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/01\/boston-i\/bostoncommave\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/BostonCommAve-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BostonCommAve\" title=\"BostonCommAve\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4924\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/01\/boston-i\/bostoncommave2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/BostonCommAve2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BostonCommAve2\" title=\"BostonCommAve2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4923\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Commonwealth Avenue runs up the length of Back Bay, parallel to Newbury and Boylston streets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/01\/boston-i\/bostoncommon\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/BostonCommon-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BostonCommon\" title=\"BostonCommon\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4925\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Entering the historic centre of Boston, via <a title=\"Wikipedia on Boston Common\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_Common\">Boston Common<\/a> [42 21 13 N, 71 4 63 W].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/01\/boston-i\/bostoncapitol\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/BostonCapitol-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BostonCapitol\" title=\"BostonCapitol\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4921\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Massachusetts State House\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Massachusetts_State_House\">state capitol<\/a> [42 21 29 N, 71 3 49 W] (of Massachusetts) lies on the north-eastern point of the Common.  (The surrounding <a title=\"Wikipedia on Beacon Hill\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beacon_Hill,_Boston,_Massachusetts\">Beacon Hill<\/a> neighbourhood is well worth a visit, but the sun was too low for a decent picture).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/01\/boston-i\/bostonburyingground\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/BostonBuryingGround-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BostonBuryingGround\" title=\"BostonBuryingGround\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4920\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Wikipedia on Copp's Hill burying ground\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copp%27s_Hill_Burying_Ground\">Copp&#8217;s Hill Burying Ground<\/a> [42 22 2 N, 71 3 23 W] in the<a title=\"Wikipedia on the North End\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_End,_Boston\"> North End<\/a> area is one of America&#8217;s oldest cemeteries.  North End was the site of an unusual industrial accident &#8211; the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Boston Molasses Disaster\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_Molasses_Disaster\">Boston Molasses Disaster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/01\/boston-i\/bostonteaparty\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/BostonTeaParty-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BostonTeaParty\" title=\"BostonTeaParty\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4930\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A plaque marking the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Boston Tea Party\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_tea_party\">Boston Tea Party<\/a>. The ethics of the Tea Party are a little greyer than presented here.  The protesters were angry over the selective <em>removal<\/em> of the tea tax for the East India Company.
