We settled for a low level walk into the &#8220;hidden valley&#8221; of Glen Coe; the valley is narrow at its bottom (L), hiding the broad valley at the top.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/orangebirchbolete\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/OrangeBirchBolete-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"OrangeBirchBolete\" title=\"OrangeBirchBolete\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5859\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A nice example of an Orange Birch Bolete, <a title=\"Wikipedia on Orange Birch Bolete\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leccinum_versipelle\"><em>Leccinum versipelle<\/em><\/a>, with its orange cap and distinctive grey scaly stalk. Unfortunately we only identified it and discovered that it (or rather its cap) was edible after the event!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/wildanimals\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/WildAnimals-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"WildAnimals\" title=\"WildAnimals\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5862\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clearly a property owner who values his privacy!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/glencoeskilift\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/GlencoeSkiLift-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"GlencoeSkiLift\" title=\"GlencoeSkiLift\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5871\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/glencoeskilifttop\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/GlencoeSkiLiftTop-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"GlencoeSkiLiftTop\" title=\"GlencoeSkiLiftTop\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5872\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Glencoe ski area is the oldest ski area in Scotland, and frankly some of the infrastructure was showing its age. But we weren&#8217;t going to pass over the option of saving over 1000 feet of hard slog up!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/glencoerannochmoor\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/GlencoeRannochMoor-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"GlencoeRannochMoor\" title=\"GlencoeRannochMoor\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5869\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/glencoerannochmoor2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/GlencoeRannochMoor2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"GlencoeRannochMoor2\" title=\"GlencoeRannochMoor2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5868\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Views from the top of <a title=\"Wikipedia on Meall a Bhuiridh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meall_a%27_Bh%C3%B9iridh\">Meall a&#8217; Bh\u00f9iridh<\/a> (1108 m) over the desolate <a title=\"Wikipedia on Rannoch Moor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rannoch_Moor\">Rannoch Moor<\/a>. (L) The mountain in the middle distance on the left is the distinctive <a title=\"Wikipedia on Buachaille Etive Mor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buachaille_Etive_M%C3%B2r\">Buachaille Etive M\u00f2r<\/a>, which stands at the head of\u00a0 Glen Coe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/glencoeglenetive\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/GlencoeGlenEtive-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"GlencoeGlenEtive\" title=\"GlencoeGlenEtive\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5867\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/glencoesheeptransporter\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/GlencoeSheepTransporter-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"GlencoeSheepTransporter\" title=\"GlencoeSheepTransporter\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5870\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A rather long diversion down the virtually uninhabited <a title=\"Wikipedia on Glen Etive\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glen_Etive\">Glen Etive<\/a>. (R) It was impossible not to look for the &#8220;sheep transporter&#8221; marked on the map. And there it was &#8211; a crate for carrying sheep across the Etive! You can just make out the farmer who seems to be making some much needed repairs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/glencoeglenetive2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/GlencoeGlenEtive2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"GlencoeGlenEtive2\" title=\"GlencoeGlenEtive2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5866\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The end of the road at Loch Etive &#8211; not perhaps the most exciting destination.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/glencoecep\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/GlencoeCep-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"GlencoeCep\" title=\"GlencoeCep\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5863\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/glencoecortinarius\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/GlencoeCortinarius-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"GlencoeCortinarius\" title=\"GlencoeCortinarius\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5864\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fungi found in woods in Glen Etive: (L) a lovely looking, but sadly flystruck, cep, <a title=\"Wikipedia on cep\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boletus_edulis\"><em>Boletus edulis<\/em><\/a>, and (R) probably some type of <a title=\"Wikipedia on cortinarius\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cortinarius\"><em>cortinarius<\/em><\/a>, a large, confusing genus of fungi, which have a distinctive web-like veil underneath when young, but which are almost all poisonous and best avoided completely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Glencoe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/glencoecottage\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/GlencoeCottage-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"GlencoeCottage\" title=\"GlencoeCottage\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5912\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/10\/glencoe-i\/glencoefolkmuseum\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/GlencoeFolkMuseum-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"GlencoeFolkMuseum\" title=\"GlencoeFolkMuseum\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5911\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(L) The charming Glencoe Cottage where we stayed. (R) The quirky Glencoe Folk Museum.
