The nameplate on Peter&#8217;s tomb is clearly illuminated; Catherine the Great&#8217;s nameplate (to the left) is much more difficult to make out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/09\/st-petersburg-iv\/spb-sppromanovs\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/SPB_SPPRomanovs-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB SPPRomanovs\" title=\"SPB SPPRomanovs\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4840\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>St. Catherine&#8217;s chapel is a memorial to <a title=\"Wikipedia on Nicholas II\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicholas_II_of_Russia\">Nicholas II<\/a> and his family who were executed on the 17th July 1918 at Yekaterinburg during the Russian revolution.  (The date and place can just be made out on the memorials.  Note that the date is given in both Julian and Gregorian calendars since the Russian Orthodox church retains the older calendar for its liturgical calendar)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/09\/st-petersburg-iv\/spb-memorial1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/SPB_Memorial1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Memorial1\" title=\"SPB Memorial1\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4844\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/09\/st-petersburg-iv\/spb-memorial2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/SPB_Memorial2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Memorial2\" title=\"SPB Memorial2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4845\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/09\/st-petersburg-iv\/spb-memorial3\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/SPB_Memorial3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Memorial3\" title=\"SPB Memorial3\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4846\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad &#8211; a Soviet  memorial to those who died during the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Seige of Leningrad\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seige_of_Leningrad\">siege of Leningrad<\/a> (as St. Petersburg was then known).  An estimated 1.2 million civilians died of starvation during the siege.
