No doubt with coffers swollen by oil money, lots of restoration work was going on. From this view you can see that many of the impressive buildings are actually built of brick with plaster facings in the form of stonework.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-iii\/spb-peterhof\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Peterhof-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Peterhof\" title=\"SPB Peterhof\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4833\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Peterhof\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peterhof\">Peterhof<\/a> is a collection of palaces and gardens, just outside St Petersburg, which was originally laid out by Peter the Great.  The Summer Palace (above) is a relatively modest affair.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-iii\/spb-peterhofmaincascade\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_PeterhofMainCascade-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB PeterhofMainCascade\" title=\"SPB PeterhofMainCascade\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4835\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Grand Cascade beneath the Grand Palace.  The sculpture in the foreground of Samson and the lion (Judges 14) symbolically represents the Russian defeat of Sweden in the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Great Northern War\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Northern_War\">Great Northern War<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-iii\/spb-peterhofcostume\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_PeterhofCostume-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB PeterhofCostume\" title=\"SPB PeterhofCostume\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4834\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was noticeable that tourism was essentially aimed at Russians.
