{"id":85,"date":"2008-08-10T15:33:22","date_gmt":"2008-08-10T15:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dur.ac.uk\/paul.hodgkinson\/wordpress\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/"},"modified":"2023-03-09T13:36:49","modified_gmt":"2023-03-09T13:36:49","slug":"st-petersburg-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"St Petersburg II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This second batch is loosely &#8220;practicalities&#8221; &#8211; accommodation, transport etc. <em>(OK a submarine and a conference banquet aren&#8217;t natural partners, but this was the best theme I could come up with).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-longcorridor\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_LongCorridor-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB LongCorridor\" title=\"SPB LongCorridor\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4813\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The aptly named &#8220;Long Corridor&#8221; used for the poster sessions, here looking rather desolate at the end of the conference.  The building [59 56 30 N, 30 17 57 E] was 1\/4 mile (400 m) long, so keeping an eye on multiple posters wasn&#8217;t very practical.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-banquet1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Banquet1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Banquet1\" title=\"SPB Banquet1\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4812\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Conference banquet in the <a title=\"Links to Ethnographic Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.saint-petersburg.com\/museums\/russian-ethnography-museum.asp\">Ethnographic Museum<\/a>.  This being Russia, each table had its own bottle of vodka&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-pribaltiskaya\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Pribaltiskaya-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Pribaltiskaya\" title=\"SPB Pribaltiskaya\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4814\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Pribaltiyskaya is a large hotel (15 accommodation floors and 1500 rooms) [59 56 20 N, 30 12 52 E] built in 1979 for the 1980 Olympics.  Now part of the Park Inn &#8220;brand&#8221;, it retains a somewhat Soviet style (including in customer service!).  Many rooms will have good views over the Gulf of Finland, but otherwise the hotel is a long way from the city centre and a poor base for exploration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-whitenights\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_WhiteNights-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB WhiteNights\" title=\"SPB WhiteNights\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4815\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-whitenights2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_WhiteNights2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB WhiteNights2\" title=\"SPB WhiteNights2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4816\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The period in June and early July is known as the &#8220;White Nights&#8221;.  At 60 degrees North, the sun barely sets in mid summer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-streets\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Streets-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Streets\" title=\"SPB Streets\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4818\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The wide streets reflect the imperial scale of the city.  Crossing them can take nerves of steel as drivers take little notice of pedestrian crossings and even less of speed limits.  As the photo shows, the vehicles were a broad mix, from the inevitable Ladas to top-of-the-range 4x4s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-signage\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Signage-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Signage\" title=\"SPB Signage\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4817\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most of the signage was hung from overhead cables.  A basic grasp of the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Cyrillic alphabet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyrillic\">Cyrillic alphabet<\/a> was very handy for getting around; CTO? translates to STOP!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-buses\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Buses-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Buses\" title=\"SPB Buses\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4819\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to ancient trolley-buses and normal buses, there is an extensive network of minvans.  Using these &#8220;<a title=\"Wikipedia on Marshrutki\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dur.ac.uk\/paul.hodgkinson\/wordpress\/Marshrutka\">marshrutka<\/a>&#8221; is a somewhat hairy experience for a non-Russian speaker.  Frequently packed solid, notes (typically 20 roubles) often had to be passed up hand-to-hand to the driver (who, needless to say, was making change and driving at the same time).  Requests to stop were shouted to the driver, but not being sufficiently confident with my Russian phrases, I just got out when a Russian speaker was getting out at more or less the right place&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In contrast official taxis were outrageously expensive, most asking 500 roubles (&gt;10 GBP) to go anywhere.  Locals, however, would often flag down a passing car and negotiate a lift!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-metro3\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Metro3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Metro3\" title=\"SPB Metro3\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4821\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-metro4\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Metro4-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Metro4\" title=\"SPB Metro4\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4822\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Wikipedia on the St Petersburg metro\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Petersburg_Metro\">St Petersburg metro<\/a> is a tourist attraction in its own right, particularly Line 1 which was opened in 1955.  N.B. apparently photography is not allowed, but I was adopting the recommended strategy of being inconspicuous around Russian officials (who have a bad habit of shaking down both tourists and Russians).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Departing metro\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dur.ac.uk\/paul.hodgkinson\/wordpress\/wp-content\/multimedia\/Metro.wav\">Sound clip<\/a> of metro leaving station (WAV format).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-metro1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Metro1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Metro1\" title=\"SPB Metro1\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4820\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Statue of Pushkin in Pushkinskaya station.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-aurora\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Aurora-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Aurora\" title=\"SPB Aurora\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4823\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The cruiser Aurora is credited with firing a blank shot which marked the signal for the assault on the Winter Palace on the 25th October 1917.  It is now a museum with a permanent (charmingly translated as &#8220;eternal&#8221;) mooring on the Neva.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-sub\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Sub-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Sub\" title=\"SPB Sub\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4825\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Apparently this former submarine has been <a title=\"St Petersburg Times on S-189\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sptimes.ru\/story\/22549\">turned into a museum<\/a> piece, although this was not very obvious.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/08\/st-petersburg-ii\/spb-schipol\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/SPB_Schipol-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SPB Schipol\" title=\"SPB Schipol\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4824\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finishing on the &#8220;transport&#8221; theme, departure gates at <a title=\"Wikipedia on Schipol\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schipol\">Schipol<\/a> (Amsterdam) airport.  Apart from the nasty gate D6, Schipol is an excellent hub airport.
