cathedral<\/a> [55 56 58 N, 3 11 30 W] (the closest thing to a national church of Scotland) lies at the midpoint of the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Royal Mile\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Mile\">Royal Mile<\/a>. (R) Its organ.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/06\/edinburgh-i\/edincitychambers\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/EdinCityChambers-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"EdinCityChambers\" title=\"EdinCityChambers\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5699\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The City Chambers are built over sealed off streets of houses (&#8220;closes&#8221;) that led down from the Royal Mile to the fetid shallow lake that was the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Nor Loch\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nor_Loch\">Nor Loch<\/a> (before this was drained to form Princes Street Gardens).\u00a0 The preserved remains of the closes, most notably <a title=\"Wikipedia on Mary King's close\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_King%27s_Close\">Mary King&#8217;s Close<\/a>, are now a tourist attraction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/06\/edinburgh-i\/edinwaverleyview\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/EdinWaverleyView-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"EdinWaverleyView\" title=\"EdinWaverleyView\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5709\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking over the roof of <a title=\"Wikipedia on Waverley\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Waverley_railway_station\">Waverley railway station<\/a> (which resembles a set of greenhouses) towards <a title=\"Wikipedia on Calton Hill\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calton_Hill\">Calton Hill<\/a>.\u00a0 The buildings of <a title=\"Wikipedia on St. Andrew's house\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St_Andrew%27s_House\">St. Andrew&#8217;s House<\/a> (the headquarters of the Scottish Government) have a rather sinister &#8220;fascist architecture&#8221; look about them. Note also the black &#8220;time ball&#8221; on the <a title=\"Wikipedia on Nelson Monument, Edinburgh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nelson_Monument,_Edinburgh\">Nelson Monument<\/a> behind. This is dropped at exactly 1 pm, coinciding with the firing of the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the One O'Clock gun\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edinburgh_Castle#One_O.27Clock_Gun\">One O&#8217;Clock Gun<\/a> at the Castle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Views from the Nelson Monument<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/06\/edinburgh-i\/edincaltonarthursseat\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/EdinCaltonArthursSeat-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"EdinCaltonArthursSeat\" title=\"EdinCaltonArthursSeat\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5693\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2011\/06\/edinburgh-i\/edincaltonholyrood\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/EdinCaltonHolyrood-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"EdinCaltonHolyrood\" title=\"EdinCaltonHolyrood\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5695\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(L) South towards the extinct volcano of <a title=\"Wikipedia on Arthur's Seat\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur%27s_Seat,_Edinburgh\">Arthur&#8217;s Seat<\/a>.
