As well as being fascinating in its own right, Berwick would make an ideal base for exploring the wonderful <a title=\"Wikipedia of the Northumberland coast\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northumberland_Coast\">Northumberland coast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/berwick-upon-tweed\/berwickbattlements\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/BerwickBattlements-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BerwickBattlements\" title=\"BerwickBattlements\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4772\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nWith its location on the English-Scottish the defence of this harbour town was of great strategic importance.   The construction of new &#8220;Italian-style&#8221; <a title=\"Berwick history\" href=\"http:\/\/www.berwick.org.uk\/berwick\/berwick.htm\">battlements to encircle Berwick<\/a> (from 1558) was the single largest undertaking of the Elizabethan period.   This <a title=\"Wikipedia on trace italienne\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trace_italienne\">star fort<\/a> structure is unique in Britain, but, in one of history&#8217;s many ironies, never served its original purpose; England and Scotland were unified when James VI of Scotland succeeded to the English throne on Elizabeth&#8217;s death without issue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/berwick-upon-tweed\/berwickemplacement\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/BerwickEmplacement-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BerwickEmplacement\" title=\"BerwickEmplacement\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4777\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>World War I gun emplacements constructed on one of the Elizabethan bastions.  Berwick was actually <a title=\"Bombing of Berwick\" href=\"http:\/\/www.westernfrontassociation.com\/thegreatwar\/articles\/research\/bombingbritain.htm\">bombed by German zeppelins<\/a> in 1916 during World War I.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/berwick-upon-tweed\/berwickchurchstreet\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/BerwickChurchStreet-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BerwickChurchStreet\" title=\"BerwickChurchStreet\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4775\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/berwick-upon-tweed\/berwickchurch\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/BerwickChurch-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BerwickChurch\" title=\"BerwickChurch\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4774\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even the church looks rather fortress-like!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/berwick-upon-tweed\/berwickcobbles\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/BerwickCobbles-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BerwickCobbles\" title=\"BerwickCobbles\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4776\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Steep cobbled street in the historic centre.  Two easily missed features: yet another CCTV camera and the holes in the roof of the Berwick Cockles shop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/berwick-upon-tweed\/berwickskip\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/BerwickSkip-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BerwickSkip\" title=\"BerwickSkip\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4780\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With so much history, you can afford to abandon bits and leave skips in front of them. Here the remains of a (market?) hall from 1874.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/berwick-upon-tweed\/berwickoldbridge\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/BerwickOldBridge-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BerwickOldBridge\" title=\"BerwickOldBridge\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4778\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Wikipedia on Berwick Bridge\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berwick_Bridge\">Berwick Bridge<\/a>: this bridge across the Tweed, built in 1611-1624, used to carry the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the A1\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A1_road\">main North-South road<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/berwick-upon-tweed\/berwickroadbridge\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/BerwickRoadBridge-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BerwickRoadBridge\" title=\"BerwickRoadBridge\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4779\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Royal Tweed Bridge\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Tweed_Bridge\">Royal Tweed Bridge<\/a> was built in the 1920s to divert road traffic from the old bridge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/berwick-upon-tweed\/berwickviaduct\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/BerwickViaduct-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BerwickViaduct\" title=\"BerwickViaduct\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4781\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/berwick-upon-tweed\/berwickviaductsweep\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/BerwickViaductSweep-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BerwickViaductSweep\" title=\"BerwickViaductSweep\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4782\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"WIkipedia on Berwick viaduct\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Border_Bridge\">Royal Border Bridge<\/a> is an impressive mid-19th C railway viaduct which brings the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the East Coast Main Line\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Coast_Main_Line\">East Cost Main Line<\/a> through Berwick.  In a telling illustration of changing attitudes to historic conservation, much of the ancient <a title=\"Wikipedia on Berwick Castle\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berwick_Castle\">Berwick Castle<\/a> was destroyed in  constructing the <a title=\"WIkipedia on Berwick railway station\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berwick-upon-Tweed_railway_station\">railway station<\/a>; the railway platforms are said to sit over the spot where <a title=\"Wikipedia on Edward I\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_I_of_England\">Edward I<\/a> took oaths of allegiance from the Scottish nobility in 1296.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/berwick-upon-tweed\/berwickborder\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/BerwickBorder-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BerwickBorder\" title=\"BerwickBorder\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4773\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>View of coastline just north of the Scottish border.
