Another set of randoms from December last year.<\/p>\n

Early December saw some heavy snow, which persisted for a couple of weeks. \u00a0Given that the snow in the previous winter was the heaviest in my time at Durham, it was surprising to have a repeat performance in the same calendar year!<\/p>\n

\"GlassCentreDucting\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Ducting in the workshop area of the National Glass Centre<\/a> in Sunderland. \u00a0Once a centre of glass making, Sunderland<\/a>, along with much of the North-East, has seen these traditional industries wither away. \u00a0Even this excellent visitor centre (built over a former shipyard) struggles to turn a profit.<\/p>\n

\"WinterGardens\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The restored Winter Gardens<\/a> at night in Sunderland. \u00a0The city was heavily bombed in World War II and 690\/70’s “regeneration” hardly improved matters, so Sunderland is not otherwise a major tourist destination.<\/p>\n

Monument marking the Victoria Hall disaster<\/a> in 1883 in which 183 children were crushed in a stampede. \u00a0The canopy is a recent addition to protect the monument from vandalism…<\/p>\n
