Although the site has a much longer history, the main building and surrounding landscaping look to date from the 1920-30&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/03\/st-johns-hadrians-wall\/hadrianwall\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/HadrianWall-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"HadrianWall\" title=\"HadrianWall\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4746\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Wikipedia on Hadrian's Wall\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hadrian%27s_wall\">Hadrian&#8217;s Wall<\/a> west of Steel Rigg.  The classic and highly recommended Hadrian&#8217;s Wall walk is from the small car park at Steel Rigg [55 0 11 N, 2 23 28 W], past Crag Lough and east to the fort at Housesteads (<a title=\"Wikipedia on Vercovicium\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vercovicium\">Vercovicium<\/a>).  The wall is much less well preserved in the westerly direction.  The weather was poor and the wind ferocious, so imagine what it was like for Roman soldiers patrolling this desolate northernmost limit of the empire!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/03\/st-johns-hadrians-wall\/hadrianwall2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/HadrianWall2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"HadrianWall2\" title=\"HadrianWall2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4747\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>View towards Steel Rigg and Crag Lough.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2008\/03\/st-johns-hadrians-wall\/disusedmine\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/DisusedMine-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"DisusedMine\" title=\"DisusedMine\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4748\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Frazer's Hush on mindat\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mindat.org\/loc-1411.html\">Frazer&#8217;s Hush<\/a> [54 47 40 N, 2 10 25 W], a disused <a title=\"Wikipedia on fluorite\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fluorite\">fluorite<\/a> mine.  Now deserted except for sheep, this area of Weardale was once busy with mines (principally lead).
