This is a random selection:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2006\/09\/signs-i\/oxford-signs\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/03\/Oxford_signs__small_-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Oxford signs\" title=\"Oxford signs\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4423\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nGroup of icons caught in Park Town, Oxford [51 45 59 N 1 15 33 W]: a rather grubby Left Only sign, an old postbox (possibly Victorian; initials are hard to read) + fire hydrant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2006\/09\/signs-i\/street-cleaning\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Street_Cleaning-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Street Cleaning\" title=\"Street Cleaning\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4466\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Typical US street cleaning notification.  It seems unlikely that such notices would been taken seriously in, say, France&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2006\/09\/signs-i\/block-numbers-01\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Block_numbers_01-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Block numbers 01\" title=\"Block numbers 01\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4350\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>US practice of incrementing addresses by 100 each &#8220;block&#8221; does result in rather anonymous large numbers, but does make them easy to locate (the base number of the block is given, as here, in a small panel above the street name at each intersection). Both pictures above were taken around 37 44 55 N, 122 27 36 W (Forest Hill area of San Francisco).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2006\/09\/signs-i\/dead-end-sign\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/Dead_end_sign-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dead end sign\" title=\"Dead end sign\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4379\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No through road&#8221; (near Dyffryn Ardudwy, Wales).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2006\/09\/signs-i\/pariscavaliers\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/10\/ParisCavaliers-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"ParisCavaliers\" title=\"ParisCavaliers\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4426\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Keep your horse&#8217;s speed down!&#8221; Ornate Paris street sign [48 51 26 N, 2 17 54 E].<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The simplicity and clarity of road signs is very appealing.
