{"id":70,"date":"2007-12-16T17:26:31","date_gmt":"2007-12-16T17:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dur.ac.uk\/paul.hodgkinson\/wordpress\/index.php\/2007\/12\/fte-des-lumires\/"},"modified":"2023-03-09T13:36:58","modified_gmt":"2023-03-09T13:36:58","slug":"fte-des-lumires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/fte-des-lumires\/","title":{"rendered":"F\u00eate des Lumi\u00e8res"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pictures from an unexpected return to Lyon in December to visit Durham students on placement at the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the CPE\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CPE_Lyon\">CPE<\/a>, Lyon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/fte-des-lumires\/lyoncdg\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/LyonCDG-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"LyonCDG\" title=\"LyonCDG\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4699\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Terminal 2F at <a title=\"Wikipedia on CdG airport\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_de_Gaulle_International_Airport\">Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport<\/a>.  The wide open spaces are a pleasant change from most airport architecture (although leave little room for construction lapses &#8211; Terminal 2E partially collapsed in 2004 and had to be completely rebuilt&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/fte-des-lumires\/lyonrhone1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/LyonRhone1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"LyonRhone1\" title=\"LyonRhone1\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4704\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Early evening view across le Pont de Lattre de Tassigny (Rh\u00f4ne) from a viewpoint on the slopes of the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Croix-Rousse\" href=\"http:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Croix-Rousse\">Croix-Rousse<\/a> [45 46 21 N, 4 50 10 E].  The Croix-Rousse was a centre of silk production in the 19th Century resulting in some distinctive architecture; apartments with high ceilings to accommodate silk looms, and a network of staircases and passageways (<a title=\"Wikipedia on traboule\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Traboule\">traboules<\/a>), which allowed the finished silk to be protected from the weather during transport.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/fte-des-lumires\/lyoncourdesvoraces2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/LyonCourdesVoraces2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"LyonCourdesVoraces2\" title=\"LyonCourdesVoraces2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4700\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/fte-des-lumires\/lyoncourdesvoraces\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/LyonCourdesVoraces-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"LyonCourdesVoraces\" title=\"LyonCourdesVoraces\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4701\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most well-known of the traboules &#8211; \u201cthe Cour des Voraces (&#8220;courtyard of the voracious (ones)&#8221;) at 9 place Colbert.    The name apparently refers to a group of particularly militant silk workers who campaigned <em>inter alia<\/em> against a plan to reduce the  size of the standard Lyonnais wine measure&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/fte-des-lumires\/lyongaresaintpaul\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/LyonGareSaintPaul-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"LyonGareSaintPaul\" title=\"LyonGareSaintPaul\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4698\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Normal accommodation in Lyon had been completely booked up by visitors to the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Fetes des Lumieres\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/F%C3%AAte_des_lumi%C3%A8res\">F\u00eate des Lumi\u00e8res<\/a>. This has recently developed into a major tourist event centred around large artwork installations; here an incomprehensible slide show on the fa\u00e7ade of the Saint Paul railway station [45 45 58 N, 4 49 37 E].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/fte-des-lumires\/lyonbellecour-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/LyonBellecour_1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"LyonBellecour 1\" title=\"LyonBellecour 1\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4697\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Place Bellecour  [45 45 29 N, 4 49 54 E]: Giant ferris wheel and the statue of Louis XIV turned into a snow dome&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/fte-des-lumires\/lyonrepublique\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/LyonRepublique-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"LyonRepublique\" title=\"LyonRepublique\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4703\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Along Rue de la R\u00e9publique<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/fte-des-lumires\/lyonmontee\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/LyonMontee-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"LyonMontee\" title=\"LyonMontee\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4702\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And up the magnificent pedestrianised Mont\u00e9e de la Grande C\u00f4te [45 46 20 N, 4 49 54 E].<\/p>\n<p>The oddest &#8220;artwork&#8221; was  &#8220;la vie en rose&#8221; &#8211; turning all the lights in the Lyon metro pink.  According to the official guide:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Les concepteurs [&#8230;] proposent [&#8230;] une entr\u00e9e optimiste et glamour dans les rigeurs de l&#8217;hiver.  [&#8230;] La partie cach\u00e9e du paysage urbain devient alors lumineuse et ce simple d\u00e9placement, un v\u00e9ritable voyage dans un univers inattendu et d\u00e9cal\u00e9.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unsurprisingly French artspeak doesn&#8217;t translate well into English&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accommodation<\/strong>: Cercle Villemanzy [45 46 21 N, 4 50 8 E] was a converted military hospital (and a convent before the Revolution) for visiting scholars (how convenient).
