Maiden Castle itself is a hill fort (thought to date from the Iron Age) on the south-east approach to Durham (the edge of the tree-covered mound is visible on the left).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/maiden-castle\/strangefruit\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/StrangeFruit-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"StrangeFruit\" title=\"StrangeFruit\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4695\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Any ideas what this tree is?  The Sports Centre is in the background of the picture.  I step inside usually just once a year to invigilate exams!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/maiden-castle\/wear\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/Wear-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Wear\" title=\"Wear\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4696\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>River Wear around Maiden Castle.  Also reveals a strange parallel universe in which people volunteer to spend Sunday afternoons playing sport.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/12\/maiden-castle\/olddurham\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/OldDurham-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"OldDurham\" title=\"OldDurham\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4693\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The intriguing <a title=\"Some web history pages on Old Durham\" href=\"http:\/\/www.northeastengland.talktalk.net\/DurhamCityGilesgate.htm\">Old Durham<\/a> farm.
