limiting its use to small items such as cutlery.\u00a0 The development of the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Bessemer process\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bessemer_process\">Bessemer process<\/a> in the 19th C allowed raw pig iron to be converted to steel much more cheaply.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2010\/12\/kelham-island-industrial-museum\/kelhamsnuffmill\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/KelhamSnuffMill-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"KelhamSnuffMill\" title=\"KelhamSnuffMill\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" a large business that industrial scale production was required!<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5489\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 12000 horsepower <a title=\"Wikipedia on River Don Engine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Don_Engine\">River Don Engine<\/a>, claimed to be the largest operational stream engine in Europe.\u00a0 Even run at low steam pressures, the working engine is an impressive sight, particularly as it able to reverse direction in seconds.\u00a0 Used to roll heavy plate, it was nearly broken up for scrap when decommissioned in the late 1970&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2010\/12\/kelham-island-industrial-museum\/kelhamcrankshaft\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/KelhamCrankshaft-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"KelhamCrankshaft\" title=\"KelhamCrankshaft\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5485\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A crankshaft for the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Merlin engine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rolls-Royce_Merlin\">Rolls-Royce Merlin<\/a> engine.\u00a0 Curiously it was cast flat\u00a0 (see mould underneath) and subsequently twisted into to its final form.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2010\/12\/kelham-island-industrial-museum\/kelhamtallboy\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/KelhamTallBoy-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"KelhamTallBoy\" title=\"KelhamTallBoy\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5494\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The main body of a <a title=\"Wikipedia on Grand Slam\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Slam_bomb\">Grand Slam bomb<\/a>, which at 10 tonnes is probably the largest bomb to be used operationally.\u00a0 Molten torpex explosive poured into the bomb casing would take a month to cool!\u00a0 Designed by <a title=\"Wikipedia on Barnes Wallis\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barnes_Wallis\">Barnes Wallis<\/a> (more well-known for his &#8220;bouncing bomb&#8221;), the Grand Slam and its smaller variant, the Tall Boy, was designed to penetrate deep into the ground and destroy foundations, rendering rebuilding impractical.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2010\/12\/kelham-island-industrial-museum\/kelhammicrometer\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/KelhamMicrometer-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"KelhamMicrometer\" title=\"KelhamMicrometer\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5487\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This infeasibly large <a title=\"Wikipedia of micrometer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Micrometer\">micrometer<\/a> rather stretches the definition of a micrometer!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2010\/12\/kelham-island-industrial-museum\/kelhamrules\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/KelhamRules-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"KelhamRules\" title=\"KelhamRules\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5491\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The letter writer seems to be\u00a0 saying that after 51 years of faithful service, he hopes that the original manufacturers will see their way to giving them a new one.\u00a0 This feels a little cheeky given how little they have obviously spent on new tools!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2010\/12\/kelham-island-industrial-museum\/kelhamworkshop\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/KelhamWorkshop-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"KelhamWorkshop\" title=\"KelhamWorkshop\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5495\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sheffield was once known for its master craftsmen, <a title=\"Wikipedia on Little Mesters\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_mester\">little mesters<\/a>,\u00a0 working in individual small workshops.\u00a0 This is a reconstruction of a workshop where intricate mechanisms were painstakingly constructed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2010\/12\/kelham-island-industrial-museum\/kelhamyearknife\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" Sheffield for the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Great Exhibition\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Exhibition\">Great Exhibition<\/a> of 1851.<\/p>\n<p><a
