The wind was strong and biting and everybody but the birds was indoors&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/04\/souter-lighthouse\/souter-lighthouse2-small\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/Souter_lighthouse2_small-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Souter lighthouse2 small\" title=\"Souter lighthouse2 small\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4513\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/04\/souter-lighthouse\/souter-lighthouse-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/Souter_lighthouse-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Souter lighthouse\" title=\"Souter lighthouse\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4510\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The window just visible on the left of the tower used to provide a distinctive split red\/white light to guide vessels into the mouth of the Wear to the south.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/04\/souter-lighthouse\/souter-foghorn\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/Souter_foghorn-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Souter foghorn\" title=\"Souter foghorn\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4511\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"National Trust: Souter Lighthouse\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/main\/w-vh\/w-visits\/w-findaplace\/w-souterlighthouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Souter Lighthouse<\/a> [54 58 14 N, 1 21 52 W] and foghorn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2007\/04\/souter-lighthouse\/souter-plant-room\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/Souter_plant_room-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Souter plant room\" title=\"Souter plant room\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-4512\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The lighthouse was technically very advanced when <a title=\"BBC Coast on Souter Lighthouse\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/wear\/content\/articles\/2005\/06\/29\/coast05walks_stage3_walk.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">built in 1871<\/a> and the machinery in the plant room here is still in good working order, although in these days of GPS, the lighthouse is no longer in operation.
