The priory was a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carthusians\">Carthusian<\/a> &#8220;charterhouse&#8221;, where the monks had individual houses around a large cloister. Unfortunately that meant it was rammed with fellow tourists&#8230; (R) Part of the former imperial palace of the Hapsburgs, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hofburg\">Hofburg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ViennaDonauinsel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4170\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ViennaDonauinsel-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ViennaDonauinsel-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ViennaDonauinsel.jpg 1725w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donauinsel\">Donauinsel<\/a> (Danube island) is a long thin island created in the late 20th C by excavating a waterway parallel to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Danube\">Danube<\/a> to &#8220;absorb&#8221; floodwater. It has its own metro stop, which gives the impression of arriving in the middle of a river! The bridge in the middle distance is the Copa Cagrana pontoon footbridge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ViennaUniversity.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4173\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ViennaUniversity-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ViennaUniversity-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ViennaUniversity.jpg 1690w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Grand stairs at the historical main building of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Vienna\">University of Vienna<\/a>. The university was founded in 1365, making it the oldest in the German-speaking world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/HebrewAlphabet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4169\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/HebrewAlphabet-300x66.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"66\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hebrew_alphabet\">Hebrew alphabet<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish_Museum_Vienna\">Vienna Jewish Museum<\/a>. Seeing the names of the letters (written right to left of course!) makes the connection with Greek alphabet much clearer.
