Pictures from a mid-April long weekend break in Gullane<\/a>, East Lothian.<\/p>\n

(L) The old church of St Andrew was abandoned and translated to nearby Dirleton in 1612, in part because it was being continually being overblown by sand. (R) The rental cottage was nicely sited on Goose Green.<\/p>\n

Harbour at North Berwick<\/a>, a popular tourist spot. In the background is North Berwick Law<\/a>, a volcanic plug.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

(L) Coast-guard station, with the island of Craigleith<\/a> in the background, and (R) slipway at North Berwick.<\/p>\n

Gatehouse of Tantallon Castle<\/a>. After having held under seige by James V<\/a> in 1528, the gatehouse was strengthened. The softer green basalt, clearly distinct from the red sandstone used elsewhere, was probably chosen to better absorb the impact of cannon.<\/p>\n

The castle is dramatically sited. (L) View from the battlements, and (R) view from the courtyard towards the distinctive Bass Rock<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On the Water of Leith Walkway<\/a>, along the route of the former Balerno line<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Aberlady Bay, which became the UK’s first Local Nature Reserve<\/a> in 1952.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Military aircraft at National Museum of Flight<\/a> at East Fortune airfield (note national here means Scotland rather than the UK!).<\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The prize exhibit: a preserved Concorde<\/a>. It is testimony to the iconic status of this aircraft that 18 of the 20 aircraft built have been preserved (one, of course, was catastrophically destroyed<\/a>, killing all passengers and crew).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
