Furness<\/strong><\/p>\n

(L) Church and (R) cloisters of Furness Abbey<\/a> (English Heritage). In its heyday, Furness matched Fountains Abbey<\/a> in wealth and lands. Now it is rather desolate, and even woefully short of information boards.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Chapel in the infirmary buildings. The infirmary buildings of Cistercian abbeys are generally surprisingly large, perhaps because it was a much easier life than being a choir monk!<\/p>\n

Hoad monument<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Sir John Barrow monument<\/a> on Hoad Hill outside Ulverston<\/a>\u00a0(commonly shortened to the Hoad monument). Ulverston is sufficiently on the outskirts of the Lake District<\/a> to lack both information centres and outdoor shops, but has a certain functional charm.<\/p>\n

Views northward towards the Lakeland hills.<\/p>\n

Stott Park bobbin mill<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

(L) Machinery and (R) display of bobbins at the Stott Park bobbin mill<\/a> (English Heritage) just outside the village of Finsthwaite.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

(L) Mill buildings and (R) High Dam, which used to provide water power for the mill until the installation of electricity in the 1940s. The mill was one of the last of many bobbin mills in the Lake District and elsewhere, only closing in 1971 as wooden bobbins were steadily replaced by plastic.<\/p>\n

Coppermines Valley<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

(L) True to its name, the Coppermines valley above Coniston<\/a>\u00a0is full of the traces of copper mining<\/a>, dating from as early as the Elizabethan period.\u00a0 (R) Levers Water<\/a> at the head of the valley.<\/p>\n
