(L) Cardoness Castle<\/a> (Historic Scotland), a 15th C tower house, and (R) view from the top over Fleet Bay.<\/p>\n

Not far up the coast from Cardoness is another ruined tower house, Carsluith Castle<\/a>. This has the added attraction of a tea-room associated with a smokery.<\/p>\n

Views over the magnificent Loch Trool in the Galloway Forest Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Caerlaverock Castle<\/a>‘s (Heritage Scotland) most striking feature is that it is triangular!<\/p>\n

The other unusual feature is the lodging built in the 17th C within the castle walls.<\/p>\n

Looking towards Caerlaverock and on towards the Nith Estuary from the Iron Age hill-fort of Ward Law.<\/p>\n

The dramatic Threave Castle<\/a> (Historic Scotland) is built on an island in the River Dee.<\/p>\n

The strange-looking Motte of Urr is the remains of a medieval motte-and-bailey<\/a> castle built by the side of the (R) River Urr. The river flows through Dalbeattie before joining the Solway Firth at Kippford.<\/p>\n
