Tees Bridges<\/strong><\/p>\n

Starting point of the walk (in mid Nov): the impressive Tees Barrage<\/a>, with four large Archimedes screws pulling water up to run down a slalom course. A “boat lift” taking canoes back up to the top of the course is on the right.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

(L) The Newport bridge<\/a> (sadly no longer in operation) and (R) the iconic Transporter Bridge<\/a> across the Tees<\/a> at Middlesborough<\/a>. Middlesborough is not (how shall we put it?) a tourist destination.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The much more recent (2008) Infinity Bridge<\/a> across the Tees at Stockton.<\/p>\n

Lumiere 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Another favourite, Helvetictoc, has now been bought by Durham County Council to become a permanent display.<\/p>\n

Randoms<\/strong><\/p>\n

(L) The waterwheels at Thwaite mills<\/a>, Leeds, have been used for a variety of purposes, finally grinding chalk and linseed oil together to make putty<\/a>. Production in 1975 after the weir burst and repair was judged uneconomic. The site is now an industrial museum. (R) View from a walk between Haworth<\/a> and Oxenhope<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cliffe Castle Museum<\/strong><\/p>\n

The town of Keighley<\/a> is again not exactly a tourist destination, but its Cliffe Castle Museum<\/a> is fascinating and well worth a visit.<\/p>\n
