Ludlow<\/strong><\/p>\n

(L) The drum of the previous carillon<\/a> mechanism (replaced by an electronic version) and (R) the bells of St. Laurence’s church<\/a>, Ludlow. The church is unusually large for a parish church,\u00a0practically\u00a0a cathedral in its dimensions, and the\u00a0bells are unusual in being capable of both being\u00a0swung by ringers and struck by the carillon (which plays a different tune for each day of the week).<\/p>\n

(L) Former buildings and (R) the former narrow-gauge railway incline of\u00a0a quarry on Titterstone Clee Hill<\/a>. The hill was extensively quarried for the hard-wearing stone\u00a0dolerite<\/a> used for road building.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The larger radar dome on Titterstone Clee is used for air traffic control, the smaller for weather monitoring. The domes provide a useful reference point in the distance!<\/p>\n

The Long Mynd<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

(L) Carding Mill valley (National Trust) – a popular route on to the hills of the Long Mynd<\/a>, starting from the charming town of Church Stretton<\/a>.\u00a0(R) Lightspout waterfall at the top of Carding Mill valley.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

(L) The ancient Port Way leads towards the highest point of the Long Mynd, Pole Bank (516 m). (R) Looking down one of the many valleys leading off the Mynd.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

(L) Descending off the Mynd (R) towards the Strettons and the\u00a0hills behind them.<\/p>\n

(L) Half-timbered house and (R) All Saints Church, with its unusual thatched roof<\/a>,\u00a0in the picturesque village of Little Stretton<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Offa’s Dyke<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Gate on Offa’s Dyke path<\/a> just north of the slightly down-at-heel Welsh border town of Knighton<\/a>. Offa’s Dyke<\/a> is a large earthwork built in the 8th C along the border between the Welsh kingdom of Powys and the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia, largely following the current English-Welsh border.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

(L) The dyke is just visible as a ridge on which the current fence is sitting. (R) Curious sheep.<\/p>\n
