The Rochdale canal<\/a> south of Todmorden. Like many other canals, the Rochdale canal (completed in 1804) was badly hit by the development of the railways and\u00a0closed in 1952. After extensive restoration efforts, it was reopened in 2002.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Views of Gaddings Dam, built in 1835 to supply mills owners who were fighting over water supplies. Strictly this is Gaddings Dam West, the earlier Gaddings Dam East, built to supply the canal, is now dry.<\/p>\n

Ducks on a frozen pond at the Rainton Meadows<\/a> nature reserve. Like many such reserves in County Durham, it was developed from former industrial workings (in this case an open cast coal mine).<\/p>\n
