Waterloo Lake was landscaped from a former quarry by unemployed soldiers returning from the Napoleonic Wars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/RoundhayCanal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Canal Gardens\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/RoundhayCanal-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Canal Gardens on the west side of Roundhay Park. To\u00a0the right is the lift shaft leading down to <a title=\"Wikipedia on Marsden Grotto\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marsden_Grotto\">Marsden Grotto<\/a>, a pub \/ restaurant built into the side of the cliff.
