Porthmadog rapidly developed during the 19th C for exporting slate. Its importance as a port dwindled over the 20th C with the decline of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slate_industry_in_Wales\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slate_industry_in_Wales\" target=\"_blank\">Welsh slate industry<\/a>. The WHHR is easily confused with the Welsh Highland Railway, which also operates from Porthmadog. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Welsh_Highland_Railway\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Welsh_Highland_Railway\" target=\"_blank\">WHR<\/a> is a much bigger affair, but its focus on tours meant that we failed to travel on it, despite <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhyd_Ddu_railway_station\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhyd_Ddu_railway_station\" target=\"_blank\">Rhyd Ddu station<\/a> being just at the head of the Nanttle valley. The ascent to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Y_Garn_(Nantlle_Ridge)\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Y_Garn_(Nantlle_Ridge)\" target=\"_blank\">Y Garn<\/a> (633 m) from just outside Rhyd Ddu was straightforward. (Top left) The next stretch to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mynydd_Drws-y-Coed\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mynydd_Drws-y-Coed\" target=\"_blank\">Mynydd Drws-y-Coed<\/a> was the hairiest, with some scrambling and careful choice of foot\/hand-holds needed. Some of us bypassed the peak of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trum_y_Ddysgl\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trum_y_Ddysgl\" target=\"_blank\">Trum Y Ddysgl<\/a>, before following a long grassy ridge (bottom left) to the Victoria monument on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mynydd_Tal-y-Mignedd\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mynydd_Tal-y-Mignedd\" target=\"_blank\">Mynydd Tal-y-Mignedd<\/a>.
