After climbing up to High Street from Pooley Bridge, the route descends from Askham Fell into (top) the picturesque village of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helton,_Cumbria\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helton,_Cumbria\" target=\"_blank\">Helton<\/a>. (Bottom) The destination is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lowther_Castle\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lowther_Castle\" target=\"_blank\">Lowther Castle<\/a>, a striking building, but which on closer inspection is just a shell. The extensive Lowther estates had been largely ruined by the extravagant <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hugh_Lowther,_5th_Earl_of_Lonsdale\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hugh_Lowther,_5th_Earl_of_Lonsdale\" target=\"_blank\">5th Earl of Londsdale<\/a> (Hugh Lowther). Curiously the hall was usually sold in three parts, with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lady_Anne_Clifford\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lady_Anne_Clifford\" target=\"_blank\">Lady Anne Clifford<\/a> being a part owner in the 17th C. Much like Lowther Castle, the hall was brought to ruin by a combination of a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victor_Brougham,_4th_Baron_Brougham_and_Vaux\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victor_Brougham,_4th_Baron_Brougham_and_Vaux\" target=\"_blank\">spendthrift owner<\/a> and the    costs of running a country house after World War I. It is gradually being brought to life as a centre for craft workshops and small businesses.
