The Gaudy was originally a feast for the benefit of students unable to return to the North of England for Christmas, but is now used for college reunions. It was fascinating to see how little people&#8217;s personalities had changed over 20 years!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2012\/04\/january-2012-randoms\/penshawmonument2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/PenshawMonument2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"PenshawMonument2\" title=\"PenshawMonument2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-6049\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2012\/04\/january-2012-randoms\/penshawmonument\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/PenshawMonument-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"PenshawMonument\" title=\"PenshawMonument\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-6050\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"wikipedia on Penshaw monument\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penshaw_Monument\">Penshaw Monument<\/a> &#8211; a County Durham landmark.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2012\/04\/january-2012-randoms\/coxgreen\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/CoxGreen-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"CoxGreen\" title=\"CoxGreen\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-6045\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The river Wear at <a title=\"Wikipedia on Cox Green\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cox_Green,_Tyne_and_Wear\">Cox Green<\/a>, just next to the Penshaw Monument.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2012\/04\/january-2012-randoms\/causeyarch-3\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/CauseyArch-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"CauseyArch\" title=\"CauseyArch\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-6043\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2012\/04\/january-2012-randoms\/causeyarchwagon\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/CauseyArchWagon-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"CauseyArchWagon\" title=\"CauseyArchWagon\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-6044\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(L) Causey Arch is the world&#8217;s oldest railway bridge and when built in 1726 was the longest single span bridge in the country (at 31 m). It was used to transport coal in horse-drawn wagons (R) from the Durham coalfields to the docks on the Tyne.
