I &#8211; the Old Town"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first of a series of photo sets from a few days in Stockholm either side of a small conference outside of Stockholm.\u00a0 This first set is based around the historic heart of the city, Gamla Stan (the Old Town).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/06\/stockholm-i-the-old-town\/stockholmfromparliament\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5007\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Stockholm is built on a collection of islands.\u00a0 This is a view from <a title=\"Wikipedia on Helgeandsholmen\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helgeandsholmen\">Helgeandsholmen<\/a> on which the Swedish parliament building is sited.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/06\/stockholm-i-the-old-town\/stockholmriddarholm\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5009\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tiny island of <a title=\"Wikipedia on Riddarholmen\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Riddarholmen\">Riddarholmen<\/a> contains largely historic, administrative buildings, giving it a strangely deserted feel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/06\/stockholm-i-the-old-town\/riddarholmkyrka\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/RiddarholmKyrka-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"RiddarholmKyrka\" title=\"RiddarholmKyrka\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" historic church on Riddarholmen with a striking 19th century cast iron spire.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/06\/stockholm-i-the-old-town\/stockholmsurveydatum\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" on Riddarholmen which was the historic reference point for Sweden.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/06\/stockholm-i-the-old-town\/gamlastanpalace\/\"><img in 1520 following a Danish invasion under Christian II.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/06\/stockholm-i-the-old-town\/gamlastanstreets\/\"><img become so dilapidated that it was nearly abandoned.\u00a0 Gamla Stan was rebuilt during the <a title=\"Wikipedia on the Great Power era\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stockholm_during_the_Great_Power_Era\">Great Power<\/a> era and further restored in the 1980s to its current photogenic state.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ph-images.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/index.php\/2009\/06\/stockholm-i-the-old-town\/stockholmfromstamlagan\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Chokladkoppen and Kaffekoppen on Stortorget are ideal for a bite to eat or drink while watching the world go by and the prices are surprisingly
