(Left) Entering the ruins of Vindolanda fort from the West. (Right) The most striking display in the extensive museum is this collection of discarded Roman footwear, perfectly preserved after nearly 2000 years by the favourable soil conditions.

A walk around Hadrian’s Wall starting at (top left) Cawfields Quarry, heading past Caw Gap (middle) and returning (bottom) via the Milecastle Inn (with Woolly Wonka, the sheep artwork across the road) and Milecastle 42.
The return journey involved stops at Carrawburgh/Brocolitia to look at the adjacent mithraeum and Aydon Castle (English Heritage).
