Another set of randoms from December last year.
Early December saw some heavy snow, which persisted for a couple of weeks. Given that the snow in the previous winter was the heaviest in my time at Durham, it was surprising to have a repeat performance in the same calendar year!
Ducting in the workshop area of the National Glass Centre in Sunderland. Once a centre of glass making, Sunderland, along with much of the North-East, has seen these traditional industries wither away. Even this excellent visitor centre (built over a former shipyard) struggles to turn a profit.
Views over the mouth of the Wear towards the Port of Sunderland from the café area of the Glass Centre.
The restored Winter Gardens at night in Sunderland. The city was heavily bombed in World War II and 690/70’s “regeneration” hardly improved matters, so Sunderland is not otherwise a major tourist destination.
Monument marking the Victoria Hall disaster in 1883 in which 183 children were crushed in a stampede. The canopy is a recent addition to protect the monument from vandalism…
Snow and ice on a weir on the Cod Beck in Thirsk at Christmas.
